Regular Center Services

Haley House Soup Kitchen Service: (4th Sunday Of The Month)

On the Fourth Sunday of every month center members volunteer at the Haley House Soup kitchen facility in Boston to prepare and serve lunch. This service project is from 8:45am to 12:30pm. Haley House is a facility that provides meals for homeless people. On a typical day there are about 65 to 80 homeless people visiting this facility for lunch. We need 5 volunteers for preparing lunch. E-mails are sent to the listserv to sign up. If you are interested simply reply to the email. (http://www.haleyhouse.org)

The winter of 2020 was especially cold, and the needs of Boston’s homeless population were exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. Haley House asked us if we could help provide winter clothing and equipment to their guests. We contributed everything from gloves and socks to winter coats, hand sanitizer, and a few space heaters and delivered these items in January of 2021.

Caregiver support program: (Once a Month)

We have been working with the Lowell General Hospital’s Social Work Department to support cancer patients in the Lowell area. The hospital provided us the names of families that, due to financial circumstances, don’t have enough money for groceries every month.

Our volunteers work with these families to create a grocery list and buy and deliver groceries to them. We are currently supporting 12-14 families every month and plan to expand the program to neighboring hospitals.

Perkins School for the Blind : (Twice a year)

Our volunteers help in the kitchen and with registration during Alumni Week, when hundreds of Perkins alumni return to campus for activities. As volunteers, we help by taking care of their luggage, serving breakfast to the students, setting up food during lunch, creating floral arrangements for the evening banquets, coordinating games during the carnival, helping out during the sports activities, collecting used linens for laundry, and collecting trash bags.

Our volunteers have also helped out during the Bay State Council of the Blind Convention, arranged by the Perkins School.  We volunteered at the registration desks as guide and assistants to the visually impaired attendees at the convention.

During Easter, volunteers assemble eggs for the annual Easter Egg Hunt for current Perkins students.

Community Harvests Project : (Twice a year)

We work with a local farm to weed, seed, plant, and grow fresh fruits and vegetables for those who are dealing with food insecurity and hunger in Worcester County, MA.

Environmental Cleanup Projects : (Twice a year)

We work with local partners like the Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary in Belmont, MA to spread wood chips on trails, dig holes for plants, clean up the area, weave natural material into fences, and seed lawns by spreading soil and grass seed.

We also partner with local organizations to clean up the Neponset and Charles Rivers every Earth Day.

Thanksgiving Baskets : (Once a year)

Every year, our members put together Thanksgiving baskets for roughly 30 families that are affiliated with a local shelter. These baskets have food items and grocery gift cards that help families in need celebrate this most American of holidays.

Care Packages for Women: (One time)

During the winter of 2020, we received several requests from local shelters to put together care packages for women. We assembled backpacks filled with toiletries, hygiene supplies, clothes, and festive holiday-themed items. These bags were delivered to the 'Transitions at Devens' shelter and the Daybreak Shelter.

School Supplies for MHSA: (Ongoing)

The Middlesex Human Service Agency (MHSA) wanted to help children living in shelters adjust and adapt to virtual learning. They reached out to us and requested school supplies, from pencils and notebooks to wireless mice and headsets. We assembled “Education Kits” for 120 children and delivered them to the MHSA. We also supplied them with breakfast cereal boxes.
